Yes I started it, and Russell and Stephen can join - they are both Second Place Winners in the great tradition of my favorite 3rd Placers - Rob C. Rudy, Lex (Africa) Kathy, and many more.

I think Rob C and Fairplay tried to dissolve the third place club after Terry came in third in Exile Island. Neither of them wanted Terry in their 'club'. Fairplay loved Shane and Courtney because he has great taste icon_cool.gif while Rob C favored Cirie and as far as I remember neither of them even mentioned Aras or Danielle.

...clearly I spent waaaay too much time listening to Fairplay's podcasts during S12. icon_lol.gif

I don't know how Rob C feels about Russell Hantz, but Fairplay did post something about how he 'didn't need any HII to save his cute little tushie in the Pearl Islands'. ....I may have adlibbed a bit on that statement though. icon_razz.gif

Well it's interesting you bring up Exile Island, because that was the first time that the idea of a "3rd Place Winner" became less defined in my mind - because of the introduction of the Hidden Immunity Idol.

In that season, Cirie WOULD have been the 3rd Place Winner (i.e., the amazing player who gets eliminated at the last possible moment) but was thwarted because of Terry's possession of the HII and thus came in 4th. At that point, 4th Place became the new 3rd, as they say.

Then the introduction of the Final 3 complicated matters even further. So in S14, we had Yau Man come in 4th place, but like Cirie he would be in the 3rd Place Winners club. Then Cirie became an actual 3rd Place Winner in Micronesia when the Final 2 returned.

Here's my personal list of the amazing players/strategists who came so close to winning and are some of my favorite players:

S1 - Rudy -3rd Place (not the top strategist of the season, but still my favorite, and would have won if he survived one more TC).

S3 - Lex - 3rd Place

S4 - Kathy - 3rd Place

S6 - Rob C. - 3rd Place

S7 - Jon Dalton - 3rd Place

S10 - Ian - 3rd Place

S11 - Rafe - 3rd Place

S12 - Cirie - 4th Place

S14 - Yau Man - 4th Place

S16 - Cirie - 3rd Place

And here are the ones who are honorary members of the club, fantastic players/strategists who actually made it to Final TC but lost because of their social game in contrast to the winner's:

S8 - Rob M. - 2nd Place
S18 - Stephen - 2nd Place
S19 - Russell - 2nd Place

I'm also a big fan of Courtney Y (2nd place in S15) but that's more for her personality. And I almost put Amanda in as an honorary member, because she played great games up until Final TC, but in both of her seasons, there was at least one better player: Todd in China, Cirie & Parvati in Micronesia.

Interestingly, in some of the early seasons where there is no "3rd Place Winner," the 3rd place player was more of a patsy/goat, used as a pawn by the superior player or players -- Ketih in S2, Jan in S5 -- or a semi-strong player used as a pawn by an evil mastermind -- Jenna in S8, Scout in S9. In those seasons without a 3rd Place Winner, usually the mastermind won: Brian in S5, Chris in S9, Yul in S13, Todd in S15.

OK, these are the kind of things I think about in between Survivor seasons. Thank goodness a new one is right around the corner, so I can stop thinking about these things and focus on a new adventure!

I wholeheartedly endorse everything in this post. icon_biggrin.gif

Except for the inference that Amanda is a mastermind. That seems kind of iffy to me.

Amanda made it to the finals twice. I don't think you do that by just being a bump on a log. No, she saved her bump on a logness for the final TC's where she just sat and gave the game to someone else. She's like Survivor's Santa Claus. icon_lol.gif

OK wait, I didn't mean to imply Amanda was a mastermind. She played very strong games but was not a mastermind - that's why I couldn't include her on my list. In China, Todd was the mastermind. In Micronesia, either Cirie or Parvati or both.

If Amanda continues her trajectory, however, she'll be #1 next time (since she went from 3rd to 2nd). However, I can't imagine anyone's going to let her get close to the Finals again. Then again, maybe they should - she's apparently a great person to go up against in Final TC.

And yes, Chris definitely qualifies as a mastermind. Contrary to semi-popular opinion, he was working his strategy from day 1. Glad you agree Outlast!

I don't see how anyone can deny Chris being a great player. Also Erinn is a good addition to that 3rd Place Club icon_smile.gif Even though I do think Stephen and to a higher degree JT played slightly better strategically.

Erinn? Why? She had virtually no impact on the game. Don't get me wrong-she was okay but she seems way overated around here.

^ 'Cause she turned around her game! I remember I thought for sure Erinn would be gone pre-merge and there was nothing she can do about that. I know she got lucky that Jerry had to go home but still, many of those Immunities that ended in puzzles that the Timbiras won were lead by her, so she did a good job at saving her ***. She lost Joe, her only ally because he was medevacuated so bad luck also got her too. It was smart to team up with the Jalapaos and separate them from Coach, Debbie and Tyson. I liked when she was all for "Let's get out Debbie!" instead of Coach because Debbie very well could have taken her out at final 5. She was also persuasive enough to get JT & Stephen to eliminate Taj, which I thought was a very dumb decision on the guys part, though it payed off.
